Cervelo P5X Repair

The Cervelo P5x is an unparalleled, performance oriented, high-end carbon fiber TT racing frame. Fully constructed from carbon fiber and available only with discs, this is one of the most expensive frames money can buy and also one of the fastest. And yet, accidents and carbon fiber damage can still happen. Luckily, we’re here help with carbon fiber repairs when they do.

As you can see the damage is relatively small and contained to the lower part of the downtube on the frontal end of the frame. A heavy impact hit the area, but due to the thickness and quality of the carbon, the damage stayed relatively central to the impact zone. You can see how far the damage has radiated through the layers as marked in yellow. We found this using our ultrasound machine.


As always, our next step is to take the frame into our custom designed wet sanding booths for damage removal. We taper sand into the damaged area to remove any broken carbon fiber before we perform the repair layup, otherwise, the damage will continue to propagate even post-repair.

We then performed the repair and the customer decided to save a bit of cash and just have us spray a gloss clear coat over the work rather than match the paint of the frame. We also had to put in a tiny drain hole in the area that was there before the repair.

All said and done, this repair was about two weeks and back to the customer. We think carbon repair is usually always worth it, but especially so when the bike costs $15k. We believe this is the first one in the world that has been fixed!
