Carbon Fiber Research

Propeling the development and innovation of Carbon Fiber Inspection and Repair Science.

Pioneering Ultrasound

We have published numerous papers and presentations on the limits and methods regarding Phased Array Ultrasound. We have a suite of the most advanced Ultrasound machines available and Automated Capture Systems.

Material Testing

What are the limits of damage extent? What is the residual strength of damaged composite structures? What is the strength of a repaired bike? We have a Universal Testing Machine to help answer these questions.

Let's work together!

If you’re interested in Carbon Fiber Material Testing or Non-Destructive Testing, please feel free to contact us. We are always excited to collaborate with partners who share our commitment to advancing and understanding composites.

Quantification of Impact Damage to Carbon Composite Bicycle Tubes Using Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing and Photomicrographic Image Analysis

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) is preferred for high-end bicycles due to its strength, stiffness, and low weight. However, CFRP is susceptible to damage from impact, misuse, or manufacturing defects. Phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is proposed as a reliable method for detecting flaws in CFRP components. Two case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of PAUT in detecting hidden damage, which is later confirmed through sectioning. The discussion emphasizes the importance of nondestructive testing techniques like PAUT, given the damage mechanisms and common failure modes observed in CFRP bicycles.

Inspection Composite

Repairing a damaged carbon frame is not only less expensive than purchasing a replacement, it’s also better for the planet. Repair keeps bicycles out of landfills and on the road and trails. In addition, fewer greenhouse gas equivalent emissions are associated with repair relative to manufacture.

Here we will witness a smack-down between a highly-engineered tape and the paint on some of the most expensive carbon fiber bikes on the market. The outcome of this fracas will determine who will be crowned King of the Adhesion Mountain.

James Bond may like his martinis shaken, not stirred, but here at Ruckus Composites we prefer our bonds to be unshakeable. Repair of carbon fiber composite bicycles requires removing the damaged composite and replacing it with new composite lay-up.
