On One Lurcher Seatstay Repair

Hardtail MTBs: are they hard to ride or are we all way too hard on them? In any case, all carbon MTBs tend to take a beating due to the nature of where we ride them. This On One carbon repair came in from a local fast guy singlespeeder for an ultrasound inspection below the seatstay/seattube junction. He’d been riding it for about a year and a half, and after the scan, we found the cracking at the bondline to be much more than superficial.

Once we sanded into the frame we found large areas of voids, porosity and sand through in the laminate. These factors all definitely contributed to the failure of the area, but luckily the frame is incredibly beefy and the actual damage was not terrible.

We filled in the voids with a thin layer of epoxy before we began our normal layup process. We reinforced the frame with extra twill as to make sure that this won’t ever happen again.

We then send it through our normal paint and finishing process, and the customer selected for our “Black and Back” repair level. A quick turnaround, a safe repair, and a bike that keep on rolling.
